Pharus D. "Bud" Wiles was born on August 16, 1919 to Frank and Elsie Michal Wiles on a farm in the Blue Hill community, northeast of Hunter. He was the 12 th child, the third born of triplets. He passed away Monday, April 29, 2019 at the Mitchell County Hospital in Beloit at the age of 99 years, 8 months, and 13 days.
As a youth, Bud attended the Blue Hill School, and was baptized at an early age at the Blue Hill Methodist Church, becoming a full member on April 1, 1934. After he finished school, he worked on farms and helped care for his mother for over 10 years.
He was called to serve his country on February 3, 1942 at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas (989 th Air Engineer Squadron), and received several medals – Automobile Mechanic 014, Driver's Badge with bar, Rifle MKM Carbine American Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Medal, World War II Victory Medal, and Good Conduct Medal.
Following his service, he worked for the gas company, and was also the former owner of Wiles Appliance, Northside Café, and Lakeside Lodge.
On March 16, 1964, he married Lucile Winkel in the Cawker City United Methodist Church. They were privileged to spend nearly 46 years of marriage together when she died in December 2009.
In addition to his wife Lucile, Bud was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Louella Caldwell, Irene Wiles, and Sylvia Parson; brothers, Everette, Herby, Deneen, Hugh, Truman, Maurice, Frank Ross, Eugene, and Arthur; children, Barbara Krein and Michael Winkel; grandson, Eric Winkel; and son-in-law, Jim Myers.
Bud is survived by his brother, Llloyd and wife Allene of Hunter, KS; children, Mary Ellen Terry and husband Richard of Council Bluffs, IA, Janice Myers of Lee's Summitt, MO, and Patrick Winkel and wife Marian of Greenwood, MO; daughter-in-law, Colleen Winkel of Hutchinson, KS; son-in-law, Don Krein of Connell, WA; nephew, Ron Wiles and family of Cawker City, who was always there for his Uncle Bud; 8 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; 3 great great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, and close relatives and friends; and his cherished cat, "Stinky".
Funeral services will be at 2 PM Saturday, May 4 at the Cawker City United Methodist Church. Visitation will take place before the service beginning at 1 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Donor's Choice.
