"Phil", as everyone knew him, attended the Haseltine School; later St. Theresa's in Cawker City, and graduated from Beloit High School in the Class of 1940. He continued his education for two years at Fort Hays State University before enlisting in the United States Navy Air Corps during World War II.

Following his discharge, he began a distinguished career in banking by working for the late Helen Tichy at Farmer's & Merchants State Bank in Cawker City and in 1959 moved his family to Beloit where he worked at the First National Bank until his retirement on December 31, 1993.

On January 24, 1949 he was united in marriage to Phyllis Ann Schoen at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Cawker City. Two daughters Sandra and Jo were born to this happy union.

As a businessman, Phil was a fixture in downtown Beloit. People knew they could trust him to take care of their banking and real estate needs with honesty and integrity. Always willing to give someone the benefit of the doubt, he was instrumental in helping many people get started with their business ventures and as a licensed real estate broker for over 55 years he enjoyed selling many people their first home.

Always friendly and finding time to fish, Phil never knew a stranger and loved to have a good time wherever he was. He delighted in playing practical jokes on others and was always up to something. One of his personal hobbies was caring for senior citizens and helping them with their business affairs. He also enjoyed collecting just about anything and everything. Phil also enjoyed bowling.

He was a devout member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. In addition he had been active in the VFW, Beloit Chamber of Commerce, Rotary, and the Red Cross.
