Ralph C. Hendricks

Ralph Charles Hendricks, the son of Pearl Franklin and Cletus Waive Rarick Hendricks, was born on August 31, 1914 on the family farm south of Glen Elder, Kansas. He departed this life of 93 years, 6 months, and 11 days early Tuesday morning, March 11, 2008 at Hilltop Lodge in Beloit, Kansas.

Ralph had three sisters Hazel, Merle, and Lois. He attended the High Prairie Country School and then went to high school in Glen Elder.

Ralph served in the United States Army for four years, beginning in 1942. He was a member of the Signal Corps and was stationed in Puerto Rico where he helped track planes going to Europe during World War II. He was later transferred back to Louisiana where he finished out his military service.

Following his discharge, he returned to the family farm and spent nearly 50 years farming and being a stock man. He loved working around the farm but especially enjoyed working on all of his machinery which he considered his hobby.

On February 3, 1968, he married Thelma Hauptli, a school teacher and long-time family friend. Ralph and Thelma were privileged to spend thirty-seven years together until her death in 2005. They made their home in Glen Elder before moving to Beloit to enjoy retirement.

Ralph was a member of the United Methodist Church of Glen Elder. He was also a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.

Ralph was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Thelma; two sisters Hazel Taylor of Raytown, Missouri and Lois Keys of Denver, Colorado, and his step-son Roger Hauptli.

He is survived by his sister Merle Hendricks of Garland, Texas; two step-sons Douglas Hauptli and wife Linda of San Antonio, Texas, Gary Hauptli and wife Tutti of Salina; two nephews Gary Taylor of Maryville, Tennessee, Kent Taylor of Raytown, Missouri; one niece Sherlyn Hobbs of Knoxville, Tennessee; six grandchildren, two great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, March 15, 2008 at the Glen Elder United Methodist Church with interment following in Glenwood Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the church, and friends may call from 9:00 A.M. until 8:00 P.M. Friday at the McDonald Funeral Home.
