Raymond Scott Walker was born in Arcola, Illinois, on July 15, 1919, the sixth son of Sanford Daniel and Harriett Gertrude Hopper Walker. He departed this life at home after a lengthy illness and entered into eternal life on Sunday, May 25, 2014, at the age of 94 years, 10 months, and 10 days.
As a child and young boy, he grew up on the farm southwest of Beloit. He attended Long Crossing and Iowa grade schools. He rode a horse 5 miles to take the 8th grade examination to qualify for high school. He graduated from Beloit High School in 1938 with honors. After high school, he chose farming and raising cattle as his lifelong profession.
On August 26, 1954, he married his friend and soul-mate, Floriene Spielman, at the Methodist Church in Beloit. To this union, two daughters were born: Nancy Raelene and Joyce Ruth. Raymond and Floriene moved to the current family farm in 1959. Raymond was a lover of the land and a good steward of the soil, recognized by receiving the Kansas Soil Conservation Award in 2003.
He was a long-time member of First United Methodist Church of Beloit, serving on various committees including the one to build the current church building, and taught Sunday School for over 20 years. He enjoyed participating in the Men's Bible Study at church, delivering Meals on Wheels, and visiting shut-ins. Raymond was an avid reader and loved the game of baseball. He was a man of integrity and humility, a loyal friend, a faithful, kind, and compassionate husband and father.
Left to mourn his passing and celebrate his life are his wife and caregiver, Floriene; daughters, Raelene (Ron) Kite of Hutchinson, KS; Joyce (Steve) Marsh of Wichita, KS; grandson, Cody Ray Campbell of Wichita, KS and his father Sam; step-grandsons Dustin (Morgan) Marsh of Wichita, KS, and Daniel Marsh of Manhattan, KS; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by an infant sister, Lenna Helen; his brothers, Horace, Kenneth, Harry, Wayne, Dale; four nephews and three nieces.
Funeral services will be at 2 PM Wednesday, May 28 at the Beloit First United Methodist Church followed by burial in Elmwood Cemetery in Beloit. Visitation will be from 1-8 PM Tuesday, May 27 at the McDonald Funeral Home. Memorials may be given to Solomon Valley Hospice or the Walker Scholarship Fund at the Church.
