Rex Lamar Thompson was born on a farm southwest of Glen Elder, Mitchell County, Kansas to Howard Michael and Leona Hazel German Thompson on March 19, 1933. He departed this life on Wednesday, February 15, 2012 at the Mitchell County Hospital in Beloit, Kansas. He grew to manhood in the Glen View Community, active in the Glen View Friends Church and attending school at the Grellette Grade School and Glen Elder High School. He graduated from Kansas State University with a BS in Agronomy; minor in animal husbandry. He was united in marriage to Joyce Long of Washington, Kansas on June 9, 1956. To this union was born three children Dawn Rexette, Thayne Alan, and Shelly Lynette.
Rex always loved the farm, beginning his farming career on a farm southwest of Beloit, Kansas in the Hopewell Community after graduating from college in 1955. Here Rex and Joyce lived and farmed together for almost 50 years. With every piece of land Rex acquired through rental agreements and purchase, his intention and goal was to always improve the ground, making the ground better than when he started farming it. In 1988, Rex and Joyce received the Mitchell County Bankers Soil Conservation Award.
Rex accepted the Lord Jesus as Savior while a young boy, and that Faith grew to be a vital part of his life determining all the decisions that were his to make. He was an active member of the Glen Elder Friends Church, serving as clerk of the Monthly Meeting as well as serving on various church committees. He served as clerk for Mid-America Yearly Meeting as well and President of the Stewards Board and various other committees. He served as Trustee for Friends University, Wichita, Kansas. He was active in county and community activities including the Farm Bureau Board, Mitchell County Extension Board, Rural Water District Board, Township Trustee, and as an adult leader of the West Beloit 4-H Club.
Rex is survived by his wife Joyce and children Dawn Roach (John), Siloam Springs, AR; Thayne Thompson (Kristin), Derby, KS; and Shelly Fransen (Michael), Blue Eye, MO. 8 grandchildren Jordan Roach, Annapolis, MD; Benjamin (Brittany) and Emily Roach, Siloam Springs, AR; Nicole, Megan, and David Thompson, Derby, KS; Jessica and Michaela Fransen, Blue Eye, MO, a sister-in-law Barbara Brokaw (Orlo) of Glen Elder.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Hazel Thompson and brothers Paul and Lloyd Thompson.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Monday, February 20, 2012 at the Glen Elder Friends Church. Cremation will follow the service. Memorials may be given to the Glen Elder Friends Church. Visitation will be from 1:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. Sunday with the family receiving friends from 6:30 P.M. until 7:30 P.M. at the McDonald Funeral Home.
