Richard Earl Duvall was born on September 16, 1919 on the family farm south of Simpson, Kansas, the son of Hiram and Laura Smith Duvall. He died one day after his birthday on Monday, September 17, 2012 at the Mitchell County Hospital in Beloit at the age of 93 years and one day.
He grew up around Simpson, and attended the Simpson Country School.
From 1942 to 1945, Richard served in World War II with the United States Army. During his service years, he helped on the construction of the Alcan Highway, which runs the length of Canada. He also spent time overseas during the Battle of the Bulge.
On April 27, 1946, he was united in marriage with Beatrice M. Srna in Beloit. Two daughters were born to this union.
After their marriage, they made their home in Beloit.
Richard worked for several years as a mechanic, and later as a rural route mail carrier until he retired at the age of 70.
He loved his family, and spent hours going to their ballgames, and helping with their activities and fundraisers. The family took many vacations, and his favorite spots included Las Vegas and Estes Park. Richard also loved to drive, whether taking the family on their evening rides to the Dairy Queen, or just a leisurely drive around town.
Richard was a member of the VFW Post #6242, where he served as Commander; the American Legion, and the Beloit First Presbyterian Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Beatrice in March, 2005; two sisters, Phyllis Atchley and Darlene Duvall; and a brother, Martin Duvall.
Richard is survived by his two daughters, Earlene "Eydie" Foltz and her husband Paul of Manhattan, and Karen Schroeder and her husband Merle of Osborne; two sisters, Marjorie Duvall of Salina and Bonnie Landrum of Portland, Oregon; five grandchildren, Brent (Heather) Schroeder of Riley, Kaylee (Chad) Myers of Manhattan, Michelle Schroeder of Lawrence, Shellee (Drew) Brokenicky of Manhattan, and Janelle Schroeder of Shawnee; eight great grandchildren, Macie and Maddie Myers, Emily Wagoner, Breanna, Brodie, and Brevin Schroeder, and Avrey and Blake Brokenicky; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM Friday, September 21 at the McDonald Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 11 AM to 8 PM Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to VFW Post #6242, Solomon Valley Hospice, or First Presbyterian Church.
