Riggle Lavon Butler, the son of Harvey and Amanda Harriet Huff Butler, was born in Rooks County, near Woodston, Kansas on June 18, 1919. He died on Sunday, February 5, 2006 at the Long Term Care Unit of Mitchell County Hospital in Beloit at the age of 86 years, 7 months, and 17 days.
He grew up in the Woodston area, where he attended school.
On May 15, 1943, he was united in marriage to Frances Imler at Mankato. Two children were born to this union, Ruth Arlene and Linda Carol. The family made their home south of Lovewell Lake, where he farmed and worked construction on the Bostwick/Courtland Canal and the Lovewell Dam. In 1962, they moved to Beloit, where he worked construction on the Glen Elder Dam. He also did carpentry work for several contractors, worked at the CO-OP Feedmill, and was janitor at Wichers Color Corporation.
Riggle enjoyed sports, and was an avid follower of Beloit High School football. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, making horseradish, and watching the birds and squirrels. Even while at Sunnyslope, he planted tomatoes, beans, and sunflowers. Riggle and Frances both enjoyed doing yard work and gardening together.
He will be remembered for not ever knowing a stranger, making people laugh, and having a soft heart for his family, friends, and animals.
Riggle was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Frances; an infant daughter, Ruth Arlene; six brothers, Charlie, Willie, Bacil, Ernie, Vandy, and Benton; and two sisters, Nellie Orr and Famy Fry.
He is survived by one daughter, Linda Buster and her husband John of McPherson; one granddaughter, Shelby Gering of Beloit; one great granddaughter, Jamie Scheuerman of Smith Center; two step-grandchildren, Shon Buster and his wife Kim of McPherson, and Heath Buster and his wife Mindy of Aurora, Colorado; five step-great grandchildren; four sisters-in-law, Vinta Butler of Phillipsburg, Lucinda Butler of Stockton, Twila Rothchild and her husband Dale of Mankato, and Vonnie Imler of Mankato; one brother-in-law, Paul Imler and his wife Eloise of Doniphan, Nebraska; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM Wednesday, February 8, at the McDonald Funeral Home in Beloit with burial in the Swedish Lutheran Cemetery near Webber. Memorials may be given to the Mitchell Co. Hospital Long Term Care Unit. Visitation will be from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM Tuesday at the McDonald Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6:30 to 7:30 PM.
