Robert Marion Smith, 79, of Cawker City, Kansas, passed away Thursday, Feb 21, 2013 at Salina Regional Health Center. Robert was born Dec. 9, 1933, in Studley, KS, to Frank and Iva Hazel Smith.
He attended school in Jewell, KS, but left after the 11th grade to join the Navy. He served for 22 years during the Korean and Vietnam wars. When he retired from the military, he moved to Harvard, NE where he farmed and worked for Hadco. He then worked in San Diego as an electronic technician for twelve years.
After retiring, he and his wife enjoyed traveling and visiting friends and family. He was a member of the V.F.W. and American Legion. He loved to golf and go fishing and enjoyed starting new projects.
He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Clifford, Melvin, Arnold, Frank and Harlan; three sisters, Maudie Overton, Iva Mae Farmer and Tillie Lantz.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 48 years, Vera Monet (Searle) Smith; his sister, Rhoda Kennedy of Salina; his children, Eugene Smith, of Yuma, AZ, Debbie Rupke, of Hays, KS, Rick Smith of Omaha, NE, Mike Smith of Hastings, NE, their spouses, eleven grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, and several beloved nieces, nephews and in-laws.
Memorial services will be at 10:30 AM Thursday at the Cawker City First Baptist Church. There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Memorials may be given to the Cawker City Senior Citizens Center or the family Expense Fund.
