Ronald Wallace McKinnie was born in Beloit, KS July 3, 1936 to R.W. and Mildred McKinnie. He passed away Wednesday, February 3, 2010 at the age of 73. Ron grew up on the family farm east of Glen Elder and attended Glen Elder Grade School and Beloit High School, graduating in 1954.
Ron met his wife Shari while attending Kansas State University, where he pledged Sigma Chi Fraternity and played on the freshman basketball team. They married in 1957. After graduating in 1959, he served a brief stint in the U.S. Army at Ft. Benning. He then returned to Glen Elder to farm with his father. He taught and coached in Jr. High School for 34 years at Cawker City and Glen Elder, where he touched the lives of many young people. Ron served as an Elder in the G.E. Christian church for over 50 years. He was a member of the G.E. Lions club, the KSU Alumni Association, and served on the Beloit Junior-Senior High School scholarship committee.
A lifetime Wildcat fan and K-State season ticket holder, he attended most home football and basketball games with his family. He especially enjoyed following his grandchildren's games and activities, and was very proud of each of them. He enjoyed farming with his grandson Landon and Greg Nicholson, playing cards with friends and family, and could be found early Sunday mornings drinking coffee at the Banner with his friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law Shelly Shellenberger. Survivors include his wife Shari, daughters Jami Miller of Glen Elder, and Jill Koster and husband Barry of Leawood; grandchildren Lindsay and Landon Miller, Kayleigh, Chase and Allison Koster; sister DeAnna Riggins and husband Bob of Norfolk, Neb.; sister-in-law Kay Schwartzkopf and husband Alfred of Ness City, and three nieces, one nephew, and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM Saturday, February 6 at the Glen Elder Christian Church followed by burial in Glenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 12:00 to 8:00 PM Friday at the McDonald Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:00 PM. Memorials may be given to the Glen Elder Christian Church or the BHS Scholarship Fund.
