I was born in Tipton, Kansas, on August 12, 1925, the oldest of seven children of Henry and Marie (Schlenz) Hake. My brothers and sisters were Clarence, Arthur, Margaret, Louella (Sr. Paulette), Norman and Etta Jean.
I attended St. Boniface grade and High School in Tipton. After graduation I worked at the Tipton Telephone Co., until I decided to pursue my dream of becoming a secretary. I enrolled for two years at Marymount College in Salina and took all the secretarial courses they had to offer. After which a friend talked me into moving to Wichita to share an apartment with her and several other girls.
My first job was in downtown Wichita, with The Wood River Oil Co., fulfilling my dream. Occasionally, I would take a bus home for the weekend, and on one of those trips I met my husband, Keith Joslyn of Concordia, who was also working in Wichita and was on the same bus.
Before we came to the junction where we changed buses, Keith managed to get my phone number, and the rest is history. We were married at Blessed Sacrament Church in Wichita on June 25, 1948.
I worked on and off for several other law offices, including McDonald, Tinker, Skaer, and ended up staying with them for 20 years, while raising a family, Vicki and Randall, before I retired.
After 56 years of marriage, Keith died on January 5, 2005, of a heart attack resulting from kidney failure. I moved to Beloit, Kansas a year later, to be closer to family and friends.
Throughout the years, I visited my daughter and son often, as well as my family in Tipton, Beloit, and Nebraska and California. I loved to write, walk, redecorate, keep my houses, and work out at the local Wellness Center. I also volunteered at the Economy Shop and local food bank. After
retirement, I wrote Life with My Father, to share with my younger brothers and sisters, who did not have much time with our dad before he passed away.
After moving to Beloit, I became a member of St. John's Catholic Church, the hospital auxiliary and Ladies Guild. I eventually came to reside in the Resident Care Center, in Beloit, where I was visited by family and friends.
Preceding me in death; my Father, Mother, Keith Joslyn, Arthur Hake, Norma Jean Hake (Arthur's wife), Sr. Paulette Hake, Bernard Eck (Margaret's husband), Clarence Hake, Etta Jean Walker, Jack Walker (Etta's husband), Alberta Hake, Sister Paulette Hake, Saylor Maine Cominse (Child of Christopher & Shauni Cominse, granddaughter of Vicki Brackett).
Left to mourn: Daughter, Vicki Brackett and husband (Don), Son Randall Joslyn, Christopher & Shauni Cominse (grandson and wife), Marilyn Hake, Margaret Eck, Norman Hake, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations should be made to the Residence Care Center, Beloit, Kansas or the Perdue House, Beloit, Kansas.
Funeral services will be at 10 AM Friday, August 8 at the St. John's Catholic Church. There will be no visitation prior to the service.
