Rosemary Belle Shurts was born on November 8, 1915 in Beloit, Kansas, the daughter of Luther Virgil and Ethel Mae Salisbury Prewett. She died early, Saturday, July 15, 2006 at the Salina Regional Hospital in Salina, Kansas at the age of 90 years, 8 months, and 7 days.
Rosemary grew up and attended country school in the Shiloh area before graduating from Beloit High School in the Class of 1933.
On October 18, 1936, she was united in marriage to Dale J. Shurts in Simpson, Kansas. One son and one daughter were born to this union. They were privileged to spend 41 years of marriage together until Dale's death in November of 1977.
Rosemary was a devoted farm wife – she and Dale built a successful farm operation from nothing in the 1930's. She enjoyed gardening, and loved hosting garage sales, and attending auctions, particularly at Zimmer's Auction Palace. Rosemary also worked at the Mitchell County Hospital, and was a long-time Hospice and Red Cross volunteer.
She was very active in community clubs and organizations. She was a member of the Beloit First Christian Church, the Athena Club, EHU, and the Logan Learners Club, was on the board of directors for the Mitchell County Historical Society, was a 52-year member of the OES, and served as a Sunday School teacher for many years.
In addition to her husband, Dale, Rosemary was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters; and one brother.
She is survived by her son, Alan and his wife Phyllis of Beloit; her daughter, Sandra Strawn of Nevada, Missouri; one sister, Lucille Trahan of Houston, Texas; four grandchildren, Renee Harper, David Strawn, Matt Shurts, and James Shurts; eight great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM Wednesday, July 19, at the McDonald Funeral Home. Memorials may be given to the Greenmound Cemetery Fence Fund or Donor's Choice. Visitation will be from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM, with family receiving friends from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Tuesday at the funeral home.
