Ross Holbrook Donker was born on May 8, 1923 to James and Grace Holbrook Donker. He departed this life of 89 years, 10 months, and 2 days Sunday, March 10, 2013 at the Mitchell County Hospital in Beloit, Kansas.
Ross was the second of eight children. He was a life long resident of Beloit, attending the Beloit school system and graduating from Beloit High School in the Class of 1941.
On June 6, 1948 he was united in marriage to Wilma Irene Peterson. Five children Steven, Susanne, Jerry, Roxanne, and Judy were born to this union.
Ross worked for the Gas Service Company which later became KPL for 42 years. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Beloit Elks Lodge, and Mount Vernon Lodge #145 AF&AM, all of Beloit.
Ross served in many ways to his community. He umpired Cookie, K18 and American Legion Baseball for many years. He helped as a ticket taker at the Beloit High School basketball games and worked with the Yardage Chain at football games for approximately 40 years.
For forty-six years, Ross took great pride in being a member of the Beloit Volunteer Fire Department. He served as Fire Chief for six years and was the second longest member to serve the department.
Ross enjoyed hunting and fishing, especially fishing in his later years.
He was a dedicated husband and father. Ross has ten grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren which he enjoyed very much.
Ross was preceded in death by his parents, step mother Ruth Hartford; daughter Susanne Smith; son-in-law Jim Welander; one sister Ruth Rypma; and one brother Norman Donker.
Left to mourn his passing and celebrate his life are his wife Wilma of the home; sons Steven and wife Carla of Beloit, Jerry and wife Nancy of Milford, Ks; daughters Roxanne Welander of Pomeroy, Iowa, Judy Melton and husband Dave of Beloit; son-in-law Larry Smith of Phillipsburg; two brothers Charles Donker of Dearborn, MI, Hollis Donker of Newton; sisters Frances Vermillion of Wichita, Margaret Aronna of Hemrico, VA; Judy Newquist of Gladstone, MO; ten grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren and countless friends.
Funeral Services will be held at 10 AM Thursday at First United Methodist Church with Pastor Tim Ault-Duell officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Beloit Volunteer Fire Department or the church. Visitation will be from 9 AM until 8 PM Wednesday at the McDonald Funeral Home.
