Stella Marie (Schwerman) Baird was born May 9, 1928 to Frank & Elizabeth "Bess" Schwerman near Beloit, Kansas. She passed from this earthly life on September 15, 2012 at the Mitchell County Hospital Resident Care Center in Beloit at 84 years of age.
Stella was baptized a Catholic as an infant at St. John's Catholic Church. She was very proud of the fact that her grandparents were involved in the building of "her" magnificent church. Stella was reared on the family farm near Beloit with her siblings and attended St. John's Catholic schools graduating in 1946. She attended Normal School and taught Country School prior to her marriage. Stella married Lyle Dean Baird on April 1, 1948 at St. John's. Lyle & Stella lived in Salina, KS for a couple of years after their marriage and then returned to Beloit where they reared their 7 children; David, Diane, Joyce, Norma, Erick, June & Elizabeth. She loved her faith and attended daily Mass for many years.
Stella was known for her quick wit and helping hands. Her many community associations included; St. John's Ladies Guild, Catholic Daughters of America, VFW Post 6242 Auxiliary, and Pinochle Club. One of Stella's most loved duties was as a volunteer as Sacristan at St. John's, a position she held for over 15 years. She loved to tend her many flower gardens and was a gifted seamstress. Her children remember well the story of their parents hunting trip to Colorado when Mom came home with the larger deer. Stella also enjoyed crafting, woodworking, bowling and many other activities. Her home was always open to her friends and a cup of coffee was always ready.
Stella's most important "job" was caring for her husband and their children. She was first and foremost a wife, helpmate and caregiver to Lyle until his death in 1990. Many remember Stella as a store clerk at JC Penney's in Beloit where she worked for many years until it closed in the late 1980's. She also sold Beauty Counselor cosmetics and worked for a short time at the Mitchell County Courthouse.
Stella was preceded in death by her husband Lyle, parents Frank & Bess Schwerman, son Erick Baird and daughter Elizabeth Parr, brothers; Clarence, Norbert, Francis, Robert and sister, Betty.
She is survived by a sister, Mary Schwerman, Beloit, sister-in-laws Ruth Schwerman and Rosalie Schwerman, her children David & Margo Baird, Mankato, Diane Gronewaller, Beloit, Joyce & Jim Robinson, Beloit, Norma & Wendel Conrad, Alma, Tammy Eilert, Mankato, June & Paul Pumphrey, Mankato, and Michael Parr, Erie, CO., a multitude of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as a host of relatives and friends.
