Thelma Louise Rominger was born to Clyde Morton and Elsie Beryl Neff Porter at Lenora, Kansas on March 14, 1919. She departed this life of 90 years, 5 months, and 3 days early Monday morning, August 17, 2009 at the Mitchell County Hospital in Beloit, Kansas.
Thelma attended school in Glen Elder, and after high school graduation took normal training at Kansas Wesleyan University and Fort Hays State University. She then taught in country schools for about four years.
It was on September 19, 1943 that she was united in marriage with Floyd Kenneth Rominger at Kirwin, Kansas. This union was blessed with one daughter Carol and two sons Dennis and Doug. They made their home on the family farm east of Glen Elder.
A matriarch extraordinaire, Thelma cherished her family and being able to provide for them. She was always at Floyd's side assisting him with farmwork. Her kitchen was always filled with the aroma of fried chicken, cinnamon rolls and her family favorites. She loved sewing and was an avid quilter. She was always there for everyone.
Besides her family, Thelma was a caregiver to others. She was a nurse's aide at the Cawker City Nursing Home and later Hilltop Lodge for many years. She was a founding member of the Hilltop Support Group.
Thelma was a member of First Christian Church and the Ladies Aide. Her faith carried her through the many trials of her life. Thelma enjoyed membership in the Bunker Hill Guild.
Her husband Floyd died in 2002. In addition, she was preceded in death by her parents, an infant brother Charles Porter, one brother Dale Porter and one sister Lois Sieh.
Left to mourn her passing and celebrate her life are her children Carol Nickel and husband John of Wichita, Dennis Rominger and wife Judy, Doug Rominger and wife Paula all of Glen Elder; one sister Joan Neifert and husband Lowell of Glen Elder; seven grandchildren, twenty-one great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild; and many friends including her lifelong special friend Ruby McKechnie.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 AM Thursday at the Glen Elder Christian Church with Pastor Cal Swickard officiating. Burial will follow in Glenwood Cemetery, Glen Elder. Memorials may be given to the Glen Elder Christian Church or the Ladies Aide. Friends may call from9:00 A.M. until 8:00 P.M. Wednesday at the McDonald Funeral Home.
