Thomas J. Ellis

Thomas Jay Ellis was born November 22, 1919 to Thomas Jay and Jessie H. Scott Ellis at El Dorado, Kansas. His productive life of 92 years ended Friday morning, February 10, 2012 at the Mitchell County Hospital, Beloit, Kansas, one day after his 69th wedding anniversary.

"Tom", as everyone knew him, lived in Holton, Kansas and then moved to Topeka where he graduated from Topeka High School. He attended Kansas State University and majored in mechanical engineering. He enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps, and it was while teaching flying at Springfield, Missouri, that he met his future wife, Mary Louise Carter and they were married on February 9, 1943 at Springfield. Three children Carolyn Sue, Jay, and Barbara were born to this vibrant union. After military service, they moved to Pittsburg, Kansas.

In 1958, Tom began a distinguished career with The Boeing Company in Wichita, Kansas and later Seattle, Washington as a Field Service Representative. Tom and Mary lived in a number of places including Madrid, Spain, and Beijing China for several years. He and Mary returned to the Bellevue, Washington area, retiring in 1988. In 1998, they made their home in Beloit, Kansas.

Tom enjoyed his life. He found great relaxation in flying, sailing, hunting, and working in community service projects such as the Boy Scouts. One of his favorite service organizations was the BlueBills made up of retired Boeing employees. He also enjoyed running and of course, being with his family.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Lions Club, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars all of Beloit.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister Louise Stumbo, and one great grandson Otis Ellis.

Left to mourn his passing and celebrate his life are his wife Mary of Hilltop Lodge, children Carolyn Sue Rasmussen and husband Charles T. of Las Vegas, NV, Jay Ellis and wife Barbara of Plano, TX, Barbara McGrath and husband Harry of Beloit, Kansas; six grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren and many friends.


Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM Wednesday, February 15 at the First Presbyterian Church in Beloit followed by burial in Elmwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 AM to 8 PM Tuesday at the McDonald Funeral Home. Memorials may be given to the Cal Farley Boys Ranch of Amarillo, TX.
