Tillman Purl Garst was born April 12, 1928 to Purl and Ruth Miner Garst at Glasco, Kansas.
He departed this life of 77 years, 10 months, and 7 days early Sunday morning, February 19, 2006 at Hilltop Lodge in Beloit, Kansas.
Tillman was united in marriage to Lila Freeman, and one daughter Karen was born to this union which was later dissolved.
On January 1, 1961, he married Bernita Fobes at Beloit, Kansas, and two children Vicki and Creed were born to this union.
Tillman and his family lived in a number of locales until making their home in Beloit. For many years, he enjoyed working for the Thompson Truck Line as a truck driver, hauling livestock throughout the Midwest. He later worked as a truck driver for Sunflower Manufacturing Company and delivered farm implements to many of the 50 states and Canada. He especially enjoyed the long hauls and took his family whenever possible. He retired in about 1986.
Besides driving the big rigs, he loved being home with his family. There, he enjoyed reading and being with his grandchildren and taking them on trips. In addition, Tillman loved tinkering with things and could repair just about anything.
He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the United States Navy.
Tillman was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6242.
His parents preceded him in death. In addition, he was preceded in death by his brothers John, Frank, Wes, and Ed Garst.
Left to mourn his death and celebrate his life are his wife Bernita of the home, two daughters Karen Snyder of Beloit, Vicki Stevenson and husband Mike of Marquette, Kansas; one son Creed Garst of Olathe, Kansas; one sister Terri Milburn and husband Bob of Beloit; one half brother Burton Thompson and wife Bonnie of Osborne, Kansas; six grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and a host of many relatives and friends.
The funeral will be at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday at the McDonald Funeral Home. Cremation will follow the service with burial of the ashes in Elmwood Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the American Diabetes Foundation. Friends may call from 9:00 A.M. until 8:00 P.M. Tuesday at the McDonald Funeral Home.
