Velma Branfort Nelson

Velma M. Chayer Branfort Nelson was born December 29, 1919 in Clay County, Kansas, the daughter of Albert and Katie Urban Chayer. She died Thursday, May 22, 2008 at Hilltop Lodge in Beloit, Kansas at the age of 88.
She grew up and attended school in Clay County.
On December 3, 1949, she was united in marriage to Porter M. Branfort. They enjoyed 18 years of marriage together until his death on February 29, 1968. She was later married to Clyde H. Nelson on May 16, 1981, and they spent 13 years of marriage together until his death on October 18, 1994.
Velma was baptized in the First Baptist Church in Kansas City, Missouri, and in the Clay Center Baptist Church. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Beloit, Order of the Eastern Star #180 in Clay Center, and the American Legion Post #227 in Clifton. She served in the Women's Army Corp in 1945.
For 4 ½ years, she worked for the Internal Revenue in Kansas City, and then moved to Clay Center in 1968, where she worked as the Clay County Register of Deeds from January 1969 to June 1982, when she moved to Beloit with her husband Clyde. She was a dedicated farmwife and housewife.
Velma loved growing flowers, gardening, canning, cooking, and baking pies – her specials being peanut butter and fresh peach pies. She also enjoyed decorating for weddings and many other social events for years while in Clifton, as well as playing bridge with friends.
In addition to her husbands, Velma was preceded in death by her parents; a step-daughter, Joan Moore, who was like a daughter to her, and her husband Ron; one sister, Eva Deschand; one brother, Everett Chayer; and one nephew, Phil Branfort.
She is survived by four nieces, Marjorie Bulleigh of Miltonvale, Doris Shroyer of Miltonvale, Donna Bartley and her husband Bernice of Grain Valley, Missouri, and Jo Dee Haas and her husband Galen of Clifton; one nephew, Mark Branfort of Clifton; two step sons, John Nelson of Anaheim, California, and Kim Nelson of Beloit; one step-granddaughter, Jennifer Moore of Boulder; two step-grandsons, Tim Moore and his wife Jonell of Reno, Nevada, and Deano Nelson of Anaheim; two step- great granddaughters, Crystal Nelson and Sophia Joan Moore of Reno; one brother-in-law, Bill Branfort and his wife Maxine of Clifton; and many great nieces and nephews, great-great nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM Tuesday, May 27, at Zion Lutheran Church in Beloit with burial at Greenwood Cemetery, Clay Center. Visitation will be from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM Monday at the McDonald Funeral Home. Memorials may be given to the church.
