Adrian (Vera) Hauptli was born on September 26, 1911 in Little River, Kansas, the daughter of Luther D. and Hattie Mae Davis Smith. She died Tuesday, May 16, 2006 at the Mitchell County Hospital Long Term Care Unit in Beloit, Kansas at the age of 94 years, 7 months, and 20 days.
Adrian, as she was known, graduated from Cawker City High School in the Class of 1929. Following graduation, she attended Ft. Hays University, and was awarded her Normal Training Teacher certificate, and taught in rural schools for 6 years. She also worked as a public school cook for many years.
On May 3, 1935, she was united in marriage to Ralph E. Hauptli in Cawker City. After their marriage, they lived on a farm south of Glen Elder for 13 years before moving to a farm north of Beloit. They later moved to a farm west of Glen Elder until 1964, when they moved for the construction of Waconda Lake. Four children were born to this union. They were privileged to spend 56 years of marriage together until Ralph's death in May of 1991.
Adrian loved to cook, and she greatly enjoyed her grandchildren. She also enjoyed sewing, quilting, and gardening.
She was a member of the Glen Elder United Methodist Church, the UMW, the Library Club, EHU, and she and Ralph were also part of pinochle groups, and they were very instrumental in the organization and fund-raising for the Glen Elder Senior Citizens Center. She also served as a 4-H leader for several years.
Adrian was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ralph; one son, Larry in 1952; one brother, Luther D. Smith Jr.; and one sister, Sue Hackett.
She is survived by one son, Donald E. Hauptli of Aurora, Colorado; two daughters, Linda McCune of Quinter, Kansas, and Jeanne and her husband Dr. Jim Stuart of Nebraska City, Nebraska; six grandchildren, Brian McCune, Kevin McCune and his wife Crystal, David Eisenmann and his wife Kimberly, Justin Stuart and his wife Dr. Christine, Dr. Jeremy Stuart, and Ashley Stuart; four great grandchildren, Jakob McCune and Chesnie McCune, Jacob Eisenmann and Gracelyn Eisenmann; one sister, Eunice Ahlvers of Beloit; one brother-in-law, Arnol Hackett of Beloit; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be at 2:30 PM Friday, May 19, 2006 at the Glen Elder United Methodist Church with burial in Glenwood Cemetery in Glen Elder. Memorials may be given to the Church or the Glen Elder Senior Citizens Center. Visitation will be from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM Thursday at McDonald Funeral Home in Beloit.
