Vernon "Vail" McClintock was born on December 18, 1928 in his grandmother's house south of Asherville, Kansas, the son of Vernon L. and Mary Dott Melton McClintock. He died on Sunday, July 26, 2009 in the Rice County Hospital in Lyons, Kansas at the age of 80 years, 7 months, and 8 days.
Vail grew up on a farm north of Barnard, and rode his pony to a one-room schoolhouse before attending Beloit High School, where he graduated in 1947.
In 1948, he was united in marriage to Betty Campbell. Two children were born to this union. They moved to a farm south of Asherville, and spent many years of marriage together, and Betty later died in October 1994.
In 1958, Vail bought the Mankato Sale Barn, which he operated for many years. He also owned and operated the Red Cloud and Beloit Sale Barns for several years. After he retired from the Sale Barn business, he became an independent cattle buyer. He later retired and moved to Sterling, before making Lyons his home for the past three years.
As a young boy, he always had a desire to buy and sell cattle, and even had toys that he played with and pretended to do just that. He got to do what he loved his entire lifetime.
Vail loved his children and grandchildren, and maintained a closeness to his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Darrell.
Vail is survived by his son, Vernon Vail McClintock Jr. and his wife Jennifer of Lyndon; his daughter, Natalie Thompson and her husband Don of Alden; two brothers, Ron McClintock of Salina and Larry McClintock and his wife Lavonne of Simpson; three grandchildren, Lindsey McClintock of Manhattan, Aubrey Mullins and her husband Scott of Sterling, and Laurel Williams and her husband Kyle of Lyons; four great grandchildren, Jordan, Tyler, and Caitlyn Mullins, and Griffin Williams; and a host of other relatives and friends.
