Virgil LeRoy Slate was born July 18, 1926 to Claude and Gemma Faye (Topliff) Slate on a farm in Browns Creek Township. He was one of 9 children, Violet, Vera, Vivian Ray, Veva Beth and four babies who died in infancy. Their mother, Faye died February 17, 1937 leaving Claude to raise five children alone.
Virgil attended grade school in Jewell County. He attended Athens High School for three years then graduated from Glen Elder High School with the class of 1944. Virgil served as a Marine in Guam, Japan and China. He was on a ship off the coast of Japan waiting for the order to invade when the atomic bomb was dropped. Virgil and Bonnie were married and lived in Jewell County most of their lives.
He is survived by his wife Bonnie of 67 years, one sister Veva Beth, three children: Jim Slate and wife Janis of Glen Elder, KS; Shirley Wright and husband Leon of Claremore, OK; Steve Slate and wife Sharon of Stockton, KS; eight grandchildren: Brian Slate, Craig Slate and wife Kyla, Mike Slate, Eric Wright, Andy Wright and wife Ann, Joshua Slate, Joel Slate and wife Michaela and Joseph Slate.
Proceeding him in death were his parents Claude and Faye and seven siblings; granddaughter Janna Lisa Slate, grandson Jarod Anthony Slate, granddaughter-in-law Jennifer (Mullin) Wright.
Virgil was a farmer, livestock man, carpenter and collector. Virgil and Bonnie attended many auctions and thoroughly enjoyed the competition of the bidding. They are members of the Christian Church in Glen Elder. Virgil's big heart included a love for his God, his family and friends, and his country.
Virgil died 10:00 AM on Sunday morning June 22, 2014 when the angels came on a thunder cloud to escort him to his heavenly home.
Funeral services will be at 10 AM Wednesday, June 25 at the Glen Elder Christian Church followed by burial in Glenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 AM to 8 PM, with family present from 6-7:30 PM Tuesday, June 24 at the McDonald Funeral Home. Memorials may be given to the Church, Mitchell County Home Health, or Solomon Valley Hospice.
