Warren John Lingg was born June 16, 1912 at Hammon, Oklahoma, the fourth son of Forest Warren and Minnie Myrtle (Wray) Lingg. He departed this life on Sunday, November 13, 2005 at the Harlan County Hospital in Alma, Nebraska at the age of 93 years, 4 months, and 27 days.
He attended many different schools as he was growing up because his dad worked for the railroad and the family moved a lot.
On September 18, 1931, he was united in marriage to Lula May Pinick. To this union was born two sons and a stillborn daughter. They made their home in Westmoreland, where Warren was employed by The Recorder until the early 1940's, when they moved to Great Bend, Kansas, and Warren was foreman of the Great Bend Herald newspaper and printing plant.
In early 1945, they moved to Cawker City, where they leased The Ledger for a short period of time before returning to Westmoreland. In 1947, the family returned to Cawker City, and purchased the newspaper, operating it until their retirement in 1977.
During his career, Warren served as Mayor of Cawker City for two terms, and was instrumental in getting many improvements for the town. He also served as chief of the volunteer fire department for two terms, and was a member of the board of directors of the Cawker City Public Library for many years. He served on the City Council and was a member of the Commercial Club for many years, serving as secretary. In 1977, he received a Service to Community Award, and in 1990, he was named Citizen of the Year by the Community Club.
Warren was an avid reader and photographer. He enjoyed raising African violets, woodworking, and ceramic work.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Cawker City, and was a 60 year member and past Master of the Cawker City Masonic Lodge #125 AF & AM.
After suffering a stroke in October of 2003, he was unable to return to his home, and was a resided in the Parkview Care Center in Osborne. In October 2004, he moved to the Colonial Villa Good Samaritan Center in Alma.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and infant daughter, Susan in 1935; his son, John Franklin in 1985; his wife, Lula in 1996; four brothers, Weldon and Carl as infants, and Cecil and Wayne; one half-sister, Martha Wariner; and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Warren is survived by his son, F. Wayne and his wife Marilyn of Alma; one daughter-in-law, Rita Lingg of Hutchinson, Kansas; six grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 AM Thursday, November 17, at the Cawker City United Methodist Church. Memorials may be given to the Cawker City Senior Center. Visitation will be from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM Wednesday at the Waconda Funeral Home, 815 West First, Cawker City, KS 67430. The Casket Will Remain Closed.
