Wayne Ellsworth Gilbert was born on June 20, 1934 in Beloit, Kansas, the son of Lawrence and Viona Ramey Gilbert. He died on Tuesday, April 18, 2017 at the Mitchell County Hospital in Beloit at the age of 82 years, 9 months, and 29 days.
Wayne and his brothers grew up and attended the Eureka country schools before attending Simpson High School. He loved all sports, especially football, and lettered in multiple sports. He graduated in 1952, and later attended Kansas State University, where he earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees.
Wayne began his teaching career in Delphos and Olsburg, before seeing much of the country, teaching in Colorado, Arizona, and Alaska, as well as working in the Civil Service in St. Louis working in a military parts warehouse. He later returned to the Beloit area, and substitute taught at both St. John's and Beloit High Schools.
He greatly enjoyed attending athletic events and supporting the kids. He also spent his spare time walking in town and reading his collection of books.
Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother Gary.
He is survived by his brother Jim and his wife Fredda of Beloit; several nieces and nephews, Beverly Marquiz, Timothy Gilbert, Katherine Boyer, and Jennifer Kempke; and many friends and former students.
Funeral services will be at 10 AM Monday, April 24 at the McDonald Funeral Home followed by burial in Highland Cemetery near Jamestown. Visitation will be from 1-8 PM Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to the Highland Church, BHS Athletic Department, or the Beloit First United Methodist Church Radio Fund.
