William "Gene" Mihm

April 9, 1931 — March 7, 2021

Glasco

William "Gene" Mihm was born on April 9, 1931 on the family farm near Delphos, Kansas, the oldest son of William and Leona Wolf Mihm. He died Sunday, March 7, 2021 at the Nicol Home in Glasco, Kansas at the age of 89.

Gene grew up around Delphos, where he attended school, as well as at the Bohemian School. He worked on the family farm at an early age. For many years, he also worked in several other jobs including cutting limestone rock, custodial work at Simpson schools, and in a machine shop in Simpson. He also worked at Sunflower Manufacturing for 24 years. Following his retirement, he returned to farming and raising cattle, which was always his true passion.

On August 19, 1960, he was united in marriage with Lila Freeman, and two sons, Dennis and Jerry, were born to this union. They were privileged to spend more than 60 years of marriage together until her death in December, 2020.

In his spare time, Gene enjoyed gardening with Lila, and they loved going to dances together at the Bohemian Hall and area Moose Lodges. They could also be found at many ballgames, as they were avid followers of their children and grandchildren.

Gene was a member of the Simpson Methodist Church and Simpson Community Church, as well as the Rural Simpson Fire Department.

Gene is survived by two sons, Dennis and his wife Amber of Beloit, and Jerry and his wife Diana of Salina; four grandchildren, Hannah Hattabaugh, Kellin Bouray and husband Klay, and Khylie and Mya Mihm; one great-grandson, Owen Bouray; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be at 10 AM Saturday, March 13 at the Beloit First United Methodist Church followed by burial in Greenmound Cemetery south of Asherville. Visitation will be from 1-7 PM Friday at the Roberts Family Funeral Home. Memorials may be given to the Nicol Home or Bohemian Hall.
