William Leo Zachary was born on May 19, 1945 in Beloit, Kansas, the son of Ray and Delila Heidrick Zachary. He died tragically at his home in Tulsa, Oklahoma on Monday, January 16, 2012 at the age of 66 years, 7 months, and 28 days.
Bill grew up in Beloit, graduating from St. John's High School in 1964. As a teen Bill traveled with his dad providing custom cutting services from Texas to Montana. When not custom cutting he worked for his parents at the family owned Zachary's Meat Market.
On June 29, 1968, Bill was united in marriage with Valissa Phillips. Four children were born to this union.
After working with his parents for several years at Zachary's Meat Market he went to work for Francis Fitzgerald at the Ace Hardware store. In 1983, Bill and Valissa bought the store known as Zachary's Ace Hardware. He was a dedicated worker and greeted everyone with his unforgettable continuous smile. He took pride in ensuring his customers were well taken care of. The customers often commented, "if you can't find it at Zachary's Ace, you can't find it anywhere." He continued to own and operate the store until his retirement in June 2011 when he moved to Tulsa.
Bill was very playful and full of life. He loved spending time with his childern and grandchildren, and was always eager to wake them in the mornings to chase them around and kiss them with shaving cream plastered all over his face. Some of his hobbies included playing cards, watching football (loved his Raiders), traveling internationally and spending time with family and friends. He spent his last Christmas in Beloit riding around on electric scooters with his grandkids, and really looked forward to watching them grow up and follow their activities.
Bill was a member of St. John's Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, the Elks Lodge, and the Beloit County Club.
Preceding him in death are his parents, and brother-in-law, Tom Horn.
Bill is survived by his former wife, Valissa of Beloit; one son, Kevin and wife Angie of Swansboro, NC; three daughters, Tennille Martin and husband Dustin of Manhattan; Kristen Long and husband Luke of Beloit, and Tiffany Zachary and special friend Aaron Wycoff of Manhattan; nine grandchildren, Ashton, Brady, Cameron, Tianna, Bode, Bryce, Teegan, Wesley, and Kaliana; four sisters, Janice Horn of Snohomish, WA, Pauline O'Keefe and husband Tony of Kansas City; Kathy Easter and husband Don of Enid, OK, and Pamela Zachary and special friend Mark Bonham of Beloit; his special companion, Sandra Lee of Tulsa; and a host of other relativies and friends.
