Zola Frances (Gates) Shull was born on July 29, 1923, one of nine children of Harry Dillon and Rilla McKee Gates in the Mitchell County Hospital in Beloit. She died on Sunday, June 4, 2006 at the Mitchell County Hospital Long Term Care Unit in Beloit at the age of 82 years, 10 months, and 6 days.
She was raised on a farm in Mitchell County and attended school in Center Township and Beloit High School.
Zola worked in the Shultz Drug Store, where she met her future husband, Joe, and on November 21, 1945, they were married at First Christian Church in Beloit. She also worked in the Humfeld Greenhouse, and in the dietary department at the Mitchell County Hospital.
She was on the committee to get the Meals on Wheels program started in Beloit, and did volunteer work at the Senior Center and the Snack Bar at the Mitchell County Hospital. Her hobbies included reading her Bible daily, attending church, quilting and piecing quilts, and traveling.
Zola was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Joe; one son, Alan; two brothers, Ancil Gates and Leland Gates; five sisters, Geneva Fuller, Velma Seaman, Clela Wehl, Margaret Tice, and an infant Justina; and one great granddaughter, Brittany Bretthauer.
She is survived by two daughters, Marilyn Evans and her husband Mike of Cawker City, and Karen Sanders and her husband Jerry of Euless, Texas; one sister, Marjorie Scoggan and her husband Clarence of Beloit; four grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Memorial services will be at 10:30 AM Thursday, June 8, at the McDonald Funeral Home in Beloit. Memorials may be given to Solomon Valley Hospice.
